The Prodigal Son

1

An old Scottish divine from the Covenanting days preached the Prodigal Son, he divided his subject into three parts. First, Sick o' Hame! Second, Hamesick! And third, Hame! Please allow me to Americanize the Celtic accent and add the Scripture. Three phases of The Prodigal Son: 1) Sick of Home: "...Father, give me..." (Luke 15:12). 2) Homesick: "And when he came to himself..." (Luke 15:17). 3) Home! "For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found" (Luke 15: 24).

As we pray for the prodigal, we sometimes find ourselves in exasperation. We ask ourselves when does the prodigal get homesick and decide to come home? Dr. J. MacDonald has pointed out three distinct sequences the prodigal must experience before he comes home as illustrated in Luke 15:14: A. He loses all he had. "And when he had spent all..." B. There is nothing to be had. "...there arose a mighty famine in that land..." C. He recognizes he had been had. "...and he began to be in want." MacDonald believes a prodigal will not come home until he has lost it all. God is our source, He longs to be recognized as our All in All. The Bible says, "Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?" (Romans 2:4). If placing us in want shows us our desperate need of Him, I say, God is good to use whatever method He so chooses to bring us to Him. Today I am praying for the prodigals. Let us take our burden to the Lord. Let Him choose the method. Let us give HIm the glory then He in His goodness brings the prodigal to Himself and home!
