Living Our Walk

I John 2:6 says, “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.”  The Greek word for walk is a metaphor for live.  We need to not only believe our Lord and His Word, but we need to live the life!  James Maston says, “We can be orthodox in theology and real heretics in the way we live.”  What we believe is very important, but we often don’t do as good a job of living it.

If we are to live the life or walk the walk Jesus would have us to, we need to:

1.   1.   Walk in Newness of Life (Romans 6:4)

The Greek word for newness is kainotes, which means “freshness.”  So often the Christian walk is stale because we are tempted to live off the convictions of our parents and spiritual leaders.

2.   2.   Walk Worthy of Your Vocation (Ephesians 4:1)

Ephesians 4:1 says to “walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called.”  The word vocation means “calling.”  I Corinthians 7:17 reads, “… as the Lord hath called every one, so let him walk….”  Worthy is from the Greek word axios, which is also translated “deserving.”  With this in mind, we should have the attitude that God’s calling on our life is deserving of our knowledge of it, of priorities being arranged around it, and of dedication to it!

3.  3.   Walk in Love (I John 2:6)

Turginev, a Russian writer from the Victorian age, tells of hard times in Russia and of being approached by a poor bum who asked of him alms.  Turginev searched his pockets and came up empty.  The author then took the outstretched hands of the beggar and clasped his hands around them and empathetically replied, “Forgive me, my brother.  I have nothing to give you.”  The poor man surprised Turginev by smiling and saying, “Ah, but you have given me something; you called me ‘brother.’”

We may not have silver or gold, but every Christian should have enough love to go around for those in desperate need of love around us.
